In the closely knit, rural town of Carthage, TX, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede was one of the town’s most beloved residents, teaching Sunday school, singing in the church choir and always more than willing to offer a helping. Everyone loved and appreciated Bernie, so it it was no surprise at all when he befriended Marjorie Nugent, an affluent widow as renowned for her sour attitude as she was her fortune. Bernie often traveled with Marjorie and even managed all of her accounts. She swiftly became completely dependent on Bernie and his generosity whith Bernie stuggling to meet her ever increasing demands. As Bernie continued to handle all of her affairs the townspeople didn’t see nor hear from Marjorie for months. Carthage recieved an almight shock following reports that Marjorie Nugent had in fact been dead for some time, with Bernie Tiede being charged with the murder.
